IT Band Syndrome
Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) is one of the most common overuse injuries among runners. It occurs when the iliotibial band is tight or inflamed. The IT band attaches to the knee and helps stabilize and move the joint. When the IT band isn’t working properly, movement of the knee (and, therefore, running) becomes painful. IT band pain can be severe enough to completely sideline a runner for weeks, or even longer.
How do we treat IT band pain specifically?
We treat IT band injuries by locating where the site of injury is. This may seem strange, but for most people, their injury isn’t necessarily in their knee. The IT ligament runs down the outside of the thigh from the hip to the shin, so we will locate the initial site of injury and treat that area.
We also treat the back of the knee to stimulate lymph circulation. The human body has a number of sites where lymph nodes sit, and one is the popliteal lymph nodes which are found of the back of the knee. By stimulating the lypmh nodes, we can reduce swelling, pain and improve circulation within one treatment.
